Meta: History
I originally decided to create a Web site because I could. My first ever effort was hosted by Freeserve, but thankfully, that is long gone! I made many of the design mistakes a new Web site author/designer makes, but I think these are to be expected as it's like a new toy.
My next Web site was hosted by AOL, which was maybe a bit better. That site is still around, if you can find it! I can't access it anymore so any broken links will just have to stay broken. There are some pictures on it, which I might eventually put on this site. They use some cunning Javascript I copied and pasted (with permission) to show a larger image from the thumbnail shown on the page that could be moved around. Some of the links are to the original Freeserve site.
I next created a simple Web site on the internal pages at Accelrys, where I worked for a few years. As this was using their CSS, it was a lot less fussy and much cleaner. I expect the Accelrys internal pages will be there for a long time, even though I've left, as no-one seems to maintain them.
Claranet was the next ISP we went with, so I used the Accelrys style sheet as a basis for that used by much of the Claranet site - I hope that's not stealing! The content of some of the pages was also much the same, but as I wrote that myself, it's definitely not stealing. The styles are different on each blog page and on my novel page - I was trying to make it look more "bookish" but I'm sure you'll agree I did not succeed.
Our ISP changed from Claranet to BT, so faced with hosting this site on Geocities, I changed to 123-reg instead, with an obligatory domain name change: to (www.)pandammonium.org.
123-reg served its purpose very well, until I wanted to host my WordPress blog on my own server, instead of the WordPress.com server. This requires PHP, which 123-reg does not support. DreamHost does support PHP, and has it ready installed on the server for you. I have completely reconstructed the site (same domain) using PHP to produce valid XHTML files that use a CSS file I concocted myself; I had the help of W3Schools for both of these tasks.
