This is a record of (major) changes I've made to the site over the years, starting at the time I switched from HTML to XHTML. It's usually more or less up-to-date.

Acquired a squarespace account, but am not entirely happy with it, even though it is easy to use once you get the hang of it, as it will cost money to maintain and the site is hosted on their servers.

Content change: updated the main page so that it shows an autobiography rather than that horrible table that looked like it should have been in a curriculum vitae. Looks much better and may even be of more interest. Who knows. Probably won't be, but there you go.

I don't know if you can see the Essex Uni version of this page from the real world, because it is on the internal server. It actually looks nothing like this site's main page any more because I haven't maintained it very well. Oops. I'll do that now.

Later…

Hmm, technical problems mean I'll have to use a computer on campus to change it. I am therefore unlikely to change it in the near future.

Later still…

Grr, I was just being thick. Well, a combination of that and the bizarre way you can't just FTP to the university server; you have to go through a set of hoops first, and then remember to change the settings upon successful upload. Most annoying. But still, it's done, and is available for all the world to see here.

Thanks to my wonderful bloke, I have sorted out my links so that I only need to maintain the one file, so I'm happy about that. I've also used it for the boingy headers on each page. It's easy to do, you just create a file that writes out the html you require and put a link to the source from where you want it on your page. Simple!

All I have to do now is sort out the columns. I hope there's an easy solution.

Today's changes affect the layout of the main page, mainly because it looks really bad and because the stuff about the infrastructure and history of the site (i.e. the content of this page) does not really belong on the main page. I may also change the style sheet a bit, if I feel like it. This is actually a spot of structured procrastination.

Ok, I think it looks tidier now, and the links appear on every page (excluding the blogs, as they are a different kettle of fish altogether). What I really need is a thing to keep track of all my links, so that if I want to change, delete or add one, I don't have to do it on every page, like I would have to do now. The server doesn't allow PHP, I don't think, so it will have to be in JavaScript, I suppose. I wonder if I could do some cunning BlogRolling thingy on it. I think what I really need is a feature like the \input{filename} that the dreaded LaTeX has, so I can have one file that contains all the links I want, and the other files just insert the contents where I tell it to. Then I would never need to change the code on each page just becasue I change the contents of the file. Is there such a feature in HTML?

The problems of the main panel disappearing beneath the side bar still occurs in both Firefox and IE, if the wondow is not wide enough. How do I fix this? Answers on a postcard to the address at the bottom of the page, please!
