This is a record of (major) changes I've made to the site over the years, starting at the time I switched from HTML to XHTML. It's usually more or less up-to-date.

Finally worked out what the problem is with the byte-ordering mark (BOM) that was being found by W3C's HTML validation. I use EditPlus 3 as my editor, and had set it to save files as unicode. However, I have just discovered the UTF signature was being added if necessary, which EditPlus deemed it to be when uploading files to the server. This signature was the being found as a potential problem, which bugged me no end. The solution to this is to have the signature set to being always removed, then there is no problem, and every one is happy!

Revamped the design of the website. The design is now more organised, and I can change the style sheet more easily now, because I did it all myself, and I know what's on it. Thanks to Eric Meyer for his reset stuff.

Added an academic tips section, where I added a couple of blogs about academic productivity. One of these was on the academic career page, making it look untidy. Also tidied up the tips section a little bit, in general.
I also added an academic see-also menu, which is context sensitive, so it doesn't show a link to the page it's on. This menu is displayed on the academic career page and the new academic tips page.
Added a feed from my photography gallery site, showing new and updated pictures. Updated some photos of Essex Uni specially!
Added a time-tracker feed in the meta section, for want of anywhere better to put it. It tracks my computational use, and tells me just how much of a slacker I really am.

Added external link icons, now that I've realised the only thing I was doing wrong was not matching the background URL in the CSS file with the actual location of the external link icon itself. Duh. The only place that it needs adding now is to the feeds; this requires some jiggery-pokery, which I'm just not going to do now. The blogs don't have any of these links - I'd have to write some sort of plug-in or some such if I wanted to do that sort of thing, I suspect.
The icon I used is hopefully inobtrusive. I may modify it if I think it's getting in the way.
