Killer Instinct?

Friday 16th September, 2005 @ 2.03pm BST Europe/London by Pandammonium

I think not.

As you may or may not know, I don’t do spiders. The cat was around when a medium-sized spider appeared within her her furry-pawed grasp. She could have caught it. I wanted her to catch it. She watched it, which isn’t quite the same.

I had to be brave in the end, and squish it myself. *shudder*

Gardening terror

Thursday 8th September, 2005 @ 3.23pm BST Europe/London by Pandammonium

I decided I’d attack the rose hip plant thing beside the buddleia I hacked at yesterday, when I discovered a spider living on a web in it. It was no ordinary spider; it was even bigger than yesterday’s! Today’s was also greener, where yesterday’s was brown. Bark-coloured, you might say. I decided not to prune the rose hip any more after that, and moved on to the buddleia by the window instead. I hacked that down without incident, and decided to do something about the weeds under the other rose hip before hacking at that.

Bad idea. That was when I saw the second spider. Ugh. I decided to leave it for another day. Just as well, really, because now there’s a thunder storm - eek! Actually, it’s not too bad, and the cat’s in now as well. She’s sitting on the scanner/printer, watching it and washing herself.

Ooh, the storm’s getting closer! I’m less happy now, and so’s Puss - she’s hiding on my knee now. Maybe the spiders did me a favour after all, making sure I was in the house before the storm broke.

I don’t suppose the rain will do the cricket any good.

Tree surgery

Wednesday 7th September, 2005 @ 6.14pm BST Europe/London by Pandammonium

Well, you could call it that, or you could just come straight out with it and call it being harsh to an overgrown buddleia with a pair of secateurs and a tenon saw.1
I just hope the bin men will be collecting the green wheelie bins tomorrow, as ours is now overflowing with buddleia and there’s still over half of it lying on the lawn to go in yet.

It’s been annoying me all summer, the buddleia, blocking out the sunlight in the evenings from our garden, and growing over the wall so you you have to duck down to avoid it every time you go out. I waited till now because I heard that butterflies love it (hence its alternative name, butterfly bush), and so, as I also heard, as butterflies are becoming rare due to their habitat being destroyed, I waited till most of the (purple) flowers had turned brown. It seemed to attract more bumble bees than butterflies if you ask me, but there you go. There’s plenty of evidence to suggest that it will grow back in abundance when it gets back into growing season again, which will be probably be overnight. They’re not ones for slow growing, these things. There’s another one, outside the window - blocking the bottom of the window - which I attacked with secateurs a couple of months ago, which is now doing a repeat. When I’ve disposed of all the tree, this bush buddleia will be next. Oh yes.

1 Not the best use of a tenon saw, admittedly, but it seemed to do the trick. My other saw, just a normal saw, was probably too long for the job.

  • Update on Thursday, September 8, 2005 at 14:03:
The bin men did empty the green wheelie bins this morning, so I started hacking up the buddleia branches that were littering the lawn. I’ve not completed this yet, though, because I was halted by the site of an evil eight-legged monster. It equals total terror to an arachnophobe like me. Anyway, I hope it’s going to go away somewhere that I’m not. It’s horrible and it’s wrecked my plans for the afternoon. I’m all out of kilter now. Too scared to go back into the garden, which is irritating at best.

Sobriety

Weird; this is the soberest I’ve felt since last week. I was ill on Wednesday and Thursday, extremely tired on Friday, until the evening, when I woke up (literally). Last Monday, of course I was drunk. But tonight, it wasn’t pub quiz, it was the Consultancy Wake. I drank and drank, but I feel too sober. It must be cos B said I should eat something, so I had the salad (I am on a diet!). When I eat, I don’t drink, and salad takes ages to eat. I spy a flaw…

C/Cats

I think Miaowy misses him. I think Dusty does a bit, too - but only cos I’m always out and she gets left in the house by herself for hours at a time. It seems I’m allowed a cat now, anyway, so that’s good news.

Arachnid

There was an arachnid in the corner near the ceiling before I went out tonight, but I wasn’t brave enough to do anything about it - other than go out and forget about it, temporarily. Now it has gone and I don’t know where it is.

C, why weren’t you here to kill it for me?

Yes, ok, I know the answer to that.

Squawk

Squeak
Miaow
Moo
Bleat
Cluck
WOOF!
