Making gods

I love this, but it’s slightly spoilt by the “blackjack” at the end because I don’t know what it means.  Neither does Language Logger Mark Liberman.  I’m assuming “no tagbacks” is the same as “no tiggy butcher”, which we said at school to mean you can’t tig the person who just tigged you.

What happened to the water?

Friday 27th June, 2008 @ 5.10pm BST Europe/London by Pandammonium

Genesis - Chapter 1 - Bible - Catholic Online

Just reading the bible*, as you do, and I’m puzzled by the first chapter of the first book, Genesis.  As I understand it, God made some water and split it in two by means of a vault, whatever that is.  There was then some water above the vault and some water below the vault.  God called the middle bit heaven and made dry land appear in the water below the vault.  Then, he populated the dry land, which he called earth, and the water under heaven seas.

The question I have is this: what happened to the water above the vault?  There doesn’t seem to be any further mention of this at all.  Maybe, God made another planet out of it, but didn’t tell us about it for some reason.

*I’m using the New Jerusalem Bible (NJB) for two reasons: 1) because it is translated from the original languages and not the erroneous (Greek?) one that the King James, for example, is translated from, so it is less likely to be susceptible to Chinese whispers (so the NJB claim, anyway); and 2) because it was the one I grew up with.

From omniscience to omnipotence

I discussed omniscience in an earlier postThis illustration says pretty much everything I’d want to say about omnipotence.

God is cruel

Thursday 5th June, 2008 @ 10.29am BST Europe/London by Pandammonium

I’ve been thinking.

God is omniscient, right? This means he knows everything. He knows what’s going to happen and when. He knows everything about the past, the present and the future.

We have free will, right? This means we can do as we choose and God has no control over what we decide.

Because God knows everything, he knows in advance what we will choose. He knew what the bad guys - and there are plenty of them - were going to do, but he still went ahead and created them. He knew they would burn in hell for all eternity because of the choices he knew they were going to make.

God deliberately made people, knowing that they would go straight to hell, would not pass go, would not collect £200 and would suffer for all eternity (minus the eternity before they died, of course).

Why would he do that?
