Knackered
Friday 7th December, 2007 @ 5.06pm GMT Europe/London by Pandammonium
I started work on Wednesday. I had to get up at 6.30 a.m.. That’s half past six in the morning. I get home about 11 hours later, except on Wednesdays, when I get rudely awakened by the dust… Fridays, when it’s only 10 hours later. Then I have to do some work on my PhD. I am not a morning person, so these early starts are somewhat disagreeable to my system. Last night, when it was only my second day, I was so tired that the Hubster forbade me to do any PhD work. I’m not much more awake tonight than I was last night. I might just have a snooze on the new sofa (that the cat appears to have damaged slightly already, despite not being allowed on it. See her innocently washing her furry-pointy paw).
I can’t say anything about my job because it’s confidential, although I did demonstrate my marvellously sharp wit today at afternoon break. Someone was telling us about the crazy lady who used to wander along Mill Road with a bucket on her head. Apparently, she couldn’t cope with what people might think about her. We all didn’t think the bucket would really help with this problem. Anyway, the narrator of this sad tale said she thought the crazy bucket lady died, because she’s never there any more.
“Did she kick the bucket?” I asked, innocently.

Happy
Tuesday 4th December, 2007 @ 2.58pm GMT Europe/London by Pandammonium
The sofa-bed has arrived! The poor old bed-sofa is sitting on the other side of the room, all disconockerated, and looking extremely sorry for itself. And no wonder: it’s to be relegated to the garage, poor thing.

Poor puss
Friday 30th November, 2007 @ 12.00pm GMT Europe/London by Pandammonium
I took the cat to the vet this morning.
I hadn’t told her what was happening, but she knew something was up because I got her cat box down, and tried to coerce her out of her cosy bed, which is like a duffel bag, and where she’d been quite happy sleeping. She wasn’t impressed. I had to force her out in the end, poor thing. She was so unhappy about the whole thing, but then when I shoved her into the carrying box, she was even less impressed, and I only just got the door shut in time. I know they say to top-load them in, like a Betamax video, but she just spreads her legs out and effectively stands on the rim, which just doesn’t help. Betamax videos never did that.
I put her and the box in the car, strapped her in, and set off for the vet. Unfortunately, she doesn’t like the car, especially when stopped for what seems to be no good reason. Why can’t she get out if we’ve stopped? Red lights must be stopped at though, no matter how much the feline complains. And Milton Road has many red lights, so it was quite a noisy trip. Still, there was worse to come.
When we got there, she saw the nice vet, who gave her a lovely cuddle, on her back, like she hates (she didn’t hiss though). Then he examined her (she did hiss) and pronounced her fit and healthy. He shoved a needle into her to top up her vaccinations for cat-lurgy (she didn’t hiss). He looked in her mouth and showed me her tooth (she hissed). She needs to have a tooth out after Xmas. He deduced from her teeth and from her dental records that she’s about 10-12 years old. She adopted us, so we never knew for certain She doesn’t act like an old cat, though. She runs around like a lunatic and plays like a kitten.
She was put back in her box - Betamax style; I don’t know how he did it - and I was given flea drops and worming tablets, charged a fortune and sent on my way. The return journey was much the same as the outward one, then when I’d parked, I opened the door on the box, and she went on my knee and put her paws on the door and looked out keenly. I told her I couldn’t open the door if she did that, so she stopped, and I opened the door, and she jumped out and exercised her new-found freedom.

Cambridge Fun Run
Friday 16th November, 2007 @ 3.10pm GMT Europe/London by Pandammonium
Normally, when the Hubster leaves for work in the morning, I’m still in bed snuggled up with the cat. She likes that, but this morning, it was different.
This morning, I got up at 7 to make the Hubster his breakfast - a posh bacon butty - because he was to run in the Cambridge Fun Run round the Science Park later, and the website says to make sure you have your breakfast that day. So I made sure he had his breakfast.
The cat noticed I was not in position, and was most disgruntled by this. She decided the way to sort it out would be to run round the house like a loon, going, “maaow” occasionally. After the Hubster had finished eating, I went upstairs to see to the cat. She was at the far side of her double bed in her bedroom, and came straight over to me when I went in the room, and purred a lot. Then, she jumped onto the floor and led me to my bedroom door, where she waited to make sure I was following, then she went round the other side of the bed, which is where she tends to jump up from for some strange furry reason, and I got on the bed and looked down at her and she immediately jumped up and implied she’d like me to get into bed again so she could snuggle up. I complied, and she snuggled. We stayed there for really quite some time.
Later, I noticed that the fun run was due to start soon, so I got ready quickly and cycled up to the Science Park, which smells a bit chemically these days, to watch. I was just behind the start line when they started, so I kind of saw the start. After loitering to see if I could see the Hubster in the throng of people outside Cambridge Consultants, where the start line is (I couldn’t), I went up to Accelrys, where there were a few spectators, some of who I know, lurking for moral support.

Accelrys were putting out two relay teams, one all boys, and one mixed (three girls and one boy). Becky was running in the mixed team, and the Hubster was propping up the rear of the boys’ team. Also in the Hubster’s team (028) were Kevin, James and Paul “Psycho” Sykes. Also in Becky’s team (029) were Toby, Elizabeth and Monica, all shown below, after the race was finished and they’d all got their breath back.

The weather was good for the event - fine, dry and sunny, with no wind or rain or anything. It wasn’t even that cold, as you might expect for the middle of November in England.
Hopefully, all the runners have made lots of money for charidee.

Pussycat Hunting
Wednesday 1st August, 2007 @ 2.40pm BST Europe/London by Pandammonium
The cat was in the garden earlier. So was a chirruping, grass-hopping grasshopper.
“I’ll ‘ave that!” claimed the cat, pouncing.
“No, you won’t!” shrieked the grasshopper, hopping.
“I will,” stated the cat, jumping.
“Won’t,” called the grasshopper, hiding.
“Where’s it gone?” asked the cat, looking.
The grasshopper said nothing.
The cat snuffled in the grass, like a truffle-hunting pig. Failing to find the grasshopper, the cat jumped to another position.
Another grasshopper was now in front of her. This one kept very still, and very quiet. Wise grasshopper. Until it jumped. Foolish grasshopper.
“I’ll ‘ave that!” claimed the cat, pouncing.
“No, you won’t!” shrieked the grasshopper, hopping.
“Where’s it gone?” asked the cat, looking.
The grasshopper said nothing.
The cat snuffled in the grass, like a truffle-hunting pig until she jumped backwards and ran into the house like a wuss.

Break
Monday 21st May, 2007 @ 11.26am BST Europe/London by Pandammonium
Must be time for a cup of tea now, I thought, but now the cat wants to be paid attention to.

Cat
Wednesday 9th May, 2007 @ 1.57pm BST Europe/London by Pandammonium
If the garage door is left open, the cat can walk onto it from the wall beside it. She likes to do that. She thinks it’s clever.
Yesterday, the Hubster was faffing with my bike, and he left the garage door open, and the cat climbed onto the door and thought she was clever. Then she went onto the rafters in the garage (the roof is peaked, not flat) and thought she was clever. Till she realised she couldn’t get down again.
