When using JSTOR in the future, open the PDF link in a new tab, which is actually not a link to the PDF, but a link to asking if you agree to the terms and conditions before redirecting you to the link, then save the PDF as a file, rather than trying to open said file, like you’re supposed to because otherwise it claims the PDF file is corrupted. Most annoying.

Reorganisation
Friday 3rd October, 2008 @ 7.59am BST Europe/London by Pandammonium
I’m having trouble concentrating on work (I have conference proceedings to write a draft for, as well as the usual PhD stuff, whatever that’s meant to be at the moment), so I thought I’d reorganise my study. I’ve been unhappy with the lack of storage space for some time now, and I looked at a cabinet on the Internet that had two filing drawers and two normal drawers in it a while ago, but didn’t buy it. I dithered. Then I decided the other day that I would buy it, but of course it was out of stock then. I said I’d like an email when they get more in stock.
In the meanwhile, I looked elsewhere, but couldn’t find one with the same combination of drawers. I got frustrated. I looked back at the original website, only to find the cabinet in stock again. I wondered where my email was, because it certainly wasn’t in my inbox! Still, I proceeded to order it anyway, while it was still there. It will take them up to 14 days to deliver it, and they have to phone me up in order to arrange it, because it’s a large item and will take two men to deliver it. What a palaver.
In the meantime, I have a half-reorganised study, which looks fine if you don’t look over there.

LAGB at Essex
Thursday 11th September, 2008 @ 4.58pm BST Europe/London by Pandammonium
Essex Uni is hosting this year’s LAGB meeting. I volunteered to help out, so I was on the registration desk today from 9 till 3. That meant I had to get up at 6 a.m., which I am not good at doing. Still, I got myself and a colleague there in plenty of time for 9. I was briefed on what to do, and sat on my bum all day registering linguists, answering linguists’ questions and chatting to linguists. I actually quite enjoyed it. I recognised several linguists and was also recognised by several linguists. A far cry from two years ago, which was the last time I went to an LAGB meeting and which was also the first time I went to one, when I didn’t know any of the linguists, let alone who any of the linguists were.

I go on a day trip. « Private Secret Diary
Most spooky - it seems that while I was at a conference in Oxford, so was PSD’s LTLP, with PSD going along for the ride. I was momentarily in the same city as PSD. Now there’s a claim to fame, if ever there was one.

OxMorph1 revisited
Monday 1st September, 2008 @ 3.36pm BST Europe/London by Pandammonium
I said I would tell more about my Oxford conference trip after talking to my supervisor about it. So here goes: I got a result!
Although I never knew what the normal process of selecting an external examiner for a PhD student is, I do now. And let me tell you, it doesn’t involve a respected academic asking the PhD student, in person, can they be the student’s external examiner. It does involve the supervisor asking their first choice academic very nicely to be their student’s external examiner and hoping they’ve got the time and inclination to say yes.
I don’t do normal.
