Installing MiKTeX 2.8 beta on Ubuntu 8.10
Trying to install MiKTeX 2.8 Beta 1 for GNU/Linux and finding that you get compilation errors on calling make? Fear not, there is a solution at hand.
Follow the instructions set out at Technically speaking, but do not comment out line 109 in the file ./Libraries/MiKTeX/Core/unx/unx.cpp, in step 5. Instead, scroll down a bit and read update 2009/01/27 and change the file accordingly. Then continue with step 6.
On entering mpm as the last step, I got the error mpm: Could not restart in windowed mode., which I gather is a common error message. I think it’s because one of the prerequisites is missing; as taken from the readme file:
The Qt development kit (version 4.2 or newer) is required, if you intend to enable GUI features (e.g., the auto-installer message box). A common name for this package is libqt4-devel.
The package required is not called libqt4-devel under debian, but there is a file called libqt4-dev, so I’ve installed that, plus all the other Qt packages I could find. Then Colin said, when I complained it still wasn’t working, that I had to make it all again so it would know it was there and everything, so I followed the instructions above again. And now it runs without error.
All I need to do now is make MiKTeX talk to Kile, my LaTeX editor, and vice versa!
