The world that revolves around Caity Ross

Noisy neighbours

Our next door neighbours are not the quietest pair of people. Even now, I can hear the non-dulcet tones of his voice chuntering on about whatever it is he chunters on about - most of the time it’s intelligible, even when I can hear it clearly. Usually, though, it’s the music. He "makes music", according to her. That means we get a constant bassline through the wall into all parts of the house except the kitchen and bathroom usually, which are on the opposite side of the house to them; this doesn’t stop it being completely audible and vibrational in the study, which is on the same side as the afore-mentioned rooms. The room he makes this music in is in their equivalent of our study (our houses have identical layout), which is right next to our bedroom.

I have gone round a few times now to complain, and each time, she answers, and is very apologetic and it gets turned either down or, even better, off immediately afterwards and it’s also quiet for a few days after that. Bliss. Last time, she said he wouldn’t play after nine o’clock. This seemed reasonable, and I thought we had an accord.

Apparently not. A couple of weeks ago, it started up again: duh duh du-de duh, duh duh du-de duh etc. late at night always including eleven o’clock and often going on until after midnight or approaching one in la madrugada ‘early hours of the morning’. I can’t sleep through this racket, but I don’t want to get out of bed to complain. So last night, I banged on the bedroom wall.

The noise stopped instantly; "did you hear that?" he asked. I didn’t wait for her reply, but it all went very quiet after that. It’s been quiet all day today as well. Let’s hope it lasts until la madrugada and beyond.
