Google v Cuil by Pandammonium at 09.45 BST, 30 Jul 2008

I searched today to find out what the range and domain of a function are, because I always forget.  Firstly, I searched for function domain range, which Google responded to by giving me a page from purplemath.com, which was useful. Cuil gave me nonsense. Then Colin interfered with his codomain nonsense, so I added codomain to the search criteria. Cuil said it had found nothing for me, whereas Google directed me to mathsisfun.com, which was useful.

In case you’re wondering, they are:

What can go into a function is called the Domain

What may possibly come out of a function is called the Codomain

What actually comes out of a function is called the Range

That’s 1-0 to Google so far, for proper searches, as opposed to to testing searches.

Hey there, I found this site using cuil. I thought I might mention a few possibilities. Firstly, I think we are all used to “searching” the way Google does its searches. So maybe if we are willing to adapt to the quirks of cuil, our results will be more relevant. I decided to try out some alternative searches for the function domain and range. I searched ‘function domain’ first, and got some very nice results. I also tried ‘function range’ and found some useful stuff as well.

    Hi Aaron,

You’re right, of course. Searching Cuil does require a different approach to searching using Google. Unfortunately for Cuil, I think Google is more intuitive. I say this because back when I first started using it, it behaved in the way I expected. Now, I assume either it still works like this or that I’m just used to any quirks it does have because it’s all I use now. Maybe I’ll give Cuil another go.

Thanks for taking the time to comment!

p.s. Thanks for drawing my attention to this post – I was trying to remember what the domain and range and everything were again, and I’d forgotten which was which, as usual, plus, I’d also forgotten about this post – duh!
