Blogs: My Books

I’ll try to review the books I’ve read, so it’s more than just a list of books

The Redbreast by Jo Nesbø by Pandammonium at 18.57 GMT, 4 Jan 2009

This is a new author for me. Nesbø is Norwegian; the book itself is a translation into English. I don’t read Norwegian.

The Redbreast is the first of a new series of books about Harry Hole, an Oslo cop in the bad books. He’s put on surveillance duty and messes up. Politics intervene and he’s transferred to a quiet corner to keep him out of mischief. Not being one to keep out of mischief for long, Hole discovers that someone has been out for shooting practice in the woods. And not just with any old gun. It’s so rarely found now that, there aren’t any registered in Norway. That’s not the only remarkable thing; it’s the gun deemed the best for assassinations.

During the second world war, not all Norwegians are on the side of the Allies. Some are fighting for Hitler on the Eastern front against the Russians. Loyalties are mixed and all is not as it seems. Who still feels bitter enough to kill more than 50 years later? And to kill whom? Can Hole find out in time?

I found the end and the motive a little weak, to be honest, and the book to be a little confusing, with possibly too many characters in it. Having said that, I did enjoy reading it and at times, couldn’t put it down. It’s easy to get immersed in this book and there’s plenty of twists and turns in the plot to keep the reader guessing. It will be good to read the next one and find out how Hole’s character is developed.
