Blogs: My Books

I’ll try to review the books I’ve read, so it’s more than just a list of books

Rereading Bosch II by Pandammonium at 05.16 GMT, 15 Jan 2008

I’ve now reread The Concrete Blonde by Michael Connelly. In this one, the case mentioned by the first two books is revisited. Four years ago, the Dollmaker was killing prostitutes and porn stars in Hollywood; Harry got a call from a witness who said she’d just escaped from him. Bosch went with her to the flat, and found the Dollmaker, Norman Church, inside. Bosch told Church not to move, twice, but Church made a move for something under the pillow of the bed he was standing naked beside. Bosch shot him dead.

Church’s wife objected to this; this book covers the civil court case ensuing from her suing Bosch for killing her husband unjustly. There are two points: Bosch killed an innocent man and that Bosch had no good reason to kill the man. There’s no doubt in Bosch’s mind that he killed the right man. But then the clear waters in Bosch’s head are muddied when a note matching previous Dollmaker notes is received at the police station. Is the Dollmaker really dead? Did Bosch kill the wrong man?

There are again more references to Bosch’s mother in this book. She was a prostitute, murdered and dumped in an alley. And guess who was the reporting officer. Irving doesn’t seem to be too much of Bosch’s enemy in this book.
