Blogs
My main blog is Pandammonia, and it is really just my ramblings. I like to think it's evolved since I started in December 2003 from an I-did-this diary to one containing things like my take on events, my ideas, my thoughts and opinions, and, of course, what I did. It's not updated as frequently as it used to be, but it's certainly not a dead blog.
My second blog is My Books. It started off as a way of keeping a record of what books I have read, but now I also have an online catalogue of my books (see my Reading page). I don't update this one very often - mainly because I never seem to get round to it, but I am trying to update it more frequently, along with writing reviews for each book.
Other blogs
I read various blogs - usually as a way to procrastinate. The ones I check most frequently are listed below for my convenience.
Language Log
Isms, gasms, etc.
The linguistic point that is so interesting about the Partially Clips cartoon strip that Mark just pointed you to is that the "suffixes" involved are not all suffixes. The endings of the words are -like, -esque, -ward, -proof, -(a)thon, -riffic, -master, -go-round, -ism, -kabob, -(o)phile, -(i)licious, and -gasm. Of these, I think I'd…

Before Christmas, it was terrible. Mammy went out every day very early, which meant I had no-one to…

A Massage buddy
Through Geoff I have met a lovely lady called Karen Merritt She is a well established Massage therapist specializing in Shiatsu and Thai massage. Both are quite different to my Swedish massage. Just before Christmas we bumped into each other at a party and got talking, like you do We soon realized that as massage therapists, we [...] a…
Private Secret Diary
I purchase a child seat for the car.
There are about 1000000 seats in the shop. I ask for some help. Child car safety seats are the things that most make me want to walk up to the gates of parliament and set myself on fire. (Apart from light bulbs). You are not allowed to put a child in a car without one of…

Birthday Happenings
Last Thursday it was Phil’s birthday. Her parents came up for the day (Phil had the day off), and then in the evening we all had dinner together. It was rather nice! The first of three birthday meals we’ve had over the past few days… but I’ll come onto that in a minute. On Friday night [...] Last Thursday it was Phil’s birthday. Startup items on OS X
For an unrelated reason I just checked the console on my Mac and found that an executable was being called every few mins, that did not exist. WTF! I used to have a 3G modem made by Huawei (T-Mobile). The software dialler was pretty rubbish, and it appears that the naffness continued after I removed…

Untitled
I tried to twatch Chitty-chitty bang-bang today. Sadly, something went wrong and I missed the ending. I have, therefore, still never seen Chitty-chitty bang-bang all the way through…

Kirkpatrick ironmongery
We bought two new engineered oak doors for the house, plus a softwood stable door for my shed (ironically the last was the most expensive due to the non-standard size). We wanted antique black ironmongery as we dislike most brass ones. I had meant to look around and find some decent ones, however, whilst…
Adventures In Jobseeking
Credit card fraud, of a different kind
This is nothing to do with my career shenanigans, but I'm cross and I need a rant. I've just booked a ticket, single from Burton on Trent to Basingstoke, 18th Dec. It's 3 bleeding changes and costs £21.45, and that's with a railcard. I don't think that's too expensive, and I like getting trains so I'm not too fussed about the journey. However what I DO object to is all the random fees that the tr…

On linguistic dreams
A correspondent writes to tell me of a linguistic dream he just had. As follows: 'I had a dream the other night with Significant Linguistic Content. It started out as the standard nightmare (mercifully infrequent these days) that I was teaching in a secondary school, as was the case long ago. But things improved and softened: the kiddies (11-year-olds, I’d say) were nice, and their…
