It might be spring, it might not be.

white crocus

You may recall I planted various kinds of crocus in late August. The saffron crocuses bloomed in autumn, and provided me with some saffron strands. Their leaves kept growing even after the flowers had died, and they’re now about a foot long and drooping over the side of the pots!

New growth has started. I planted some white ones that would flower in early spring. These are flowering now, probably because of the mild winter, so it must be early spring now. They must have got a shock when it turned so cold! However, I did bring the pots in when the snow was forecast – didn’t want them freezing to death, after all! That’s when the flowers started opening.

I put them back outside a day or two later though, because there were loads of little greyish beasties on them – ugh! The flowers are closed now (see picture) — perhaps it’s too cold for them now!

I also planted some blue ones that are supposed to flower in early spring. There’s no sign of either of these, so maybe it isn’t early spring after all!
