There’s been a lot of mocking the maggie scum recently, and quite right too, if you ask me.

I met a magpie at Strawberry Fair on Saturday. “Har har!” I burst out. He didn’t want to talk about football, oddly enough. He said he’d had a few north-easterners at his stall, and the last one had also been a Mackem, and they laughed as well, which made me laugh again.

The best mockery has to be the two signs that a couple of Mackems put on the road to Newcastle from Sunderland, with one sign pointing each way. The sign pointing towards Sunderland says, with an arrow pointing straight ahead:

The Stadium of Light
The North East’s only Premier League stadium

The one pointing to the scum says, also with an arrow pointing ahead:

Sid James’ Park
The biggest stadium in the ‘fizzy pop’ league

This was brought to my attention by my brother, who sent me a link to the excellent video on youtube showing the two Mackems responsible showing off and unveiling the signs. They’ll get no marks for camera work, but the content is fantastic. Makes me laugh every time I watch it, especially the commentary at the very end.

A couple of friends have also pointed out that the signs have even made the local BBC news.

I just hope the council leave them there: they’re fantastic!

Update (30/06/09): the person who posted the youtube video has taken it down! What a travesty! Bring it back! I knew I should have made more effort to save the video locally.

Tell the world about this!

Will you be the first person to respond?
