Music on Ubuntu

I have decided that I like Rhythmbox on Ubuntu. It plays cds and last.fm streams and scrobbles your music to last.fm, which is exactly what I want. I have also got the last.fm player for Linux, too, which was installed using the apt-get thing that seems to be unique to Ubuntu. I love apt-get, because I have no idea where to install stuff, so just being given a file to download is no use whatsoever.

Update [a little later]: Fergycool tells me that the apt-get thing is Debian, not Ubuntu. Sorry about getting that mixed up. I have little idea what the difference between Ubuntu, Debian, KDE, Gnome and all these other Linux-related terms are. Ubuntu is a distribution, I believe, but it does have something to do with Debian; how would it have the apt-get thing if it didn’t? I don’t know what the relationship is, though.

  • I’ve also started using Rhythmbox – switched from Audacious (which is a Linux clone of WinAmp classic). The reason being, I like having all of my MP3s on random and Audacious kept losing half my playlist randomly. Weird.)

Apt-Get is Debian. Debian is the distribution which Ubuntu is based on – basically the Ubuntu developers have extended the Debian base. Debian is a pretty solid distribution which has been going for a long time.

Gnome and KDE are window managers, basically that means they control the GUI element of your desktop and applications. You’re probably using Gnome, unless you’re using Kubuntu (which uses KDE). You can’t use both of them at the same time although you can switch from one to the other if you install both :)

Sorry if that’s confusing, Linux is a bit overwhelming at first but stick with it and you’ll find that you don’t really need to know half this stuff!

  • I never liked WinAmp anyway, or Realplayer, for that matter. I actually much preferred Windows Media Player! What’s annoying me with Rhythmbox, apart from it’s a pain to type, is that there’s no explicit ‘stop’ button. If you unpress the play button, it pauses, which is ok for if you want to pause, but if you want to stop it, then it’s jsut wrong. Also, if I want to swap from playing a cd to a last.fm stream, it goes all horribly wrong.

I now comprehend what Ubuntu and Debian are. I was following what you were saying about GNOME and KDE, but then you lost me after the bit about Kubuntu, which I’m not using. Is there a way to see which of the two window managers I am using?

“Linux is a bit overwhelming” you say; change that to “very” and I’ll believe you! ;)

  • I do have GNOME, it would seem. I just tried some other window managers, but they’re scary, especially ratpoison!

  • Kubuntu is just a version of Ubuntu which comes with KDE by default, instead of Gnome :)
