Domestic goddessery

The last time I made a loaf of bread, C said it tasted worse than the shop-bought stuff we got at the time, which was cheap ‘n’ nasty.  I was most put out, especially as I’d used posh flour bought from the mill, and never made bread again.

That was until today, when I made soda bread.  I have looked and looked in Tesco for buttermilk, to no avail, but my brother referred to his brand new cookery book and said I could fake it by mixing the juice of half a lemon with half a pint of milk.  So yesterday, when I did the shopping, I didn’t buy any bread (other than wholemeal pitta breads, which don’t count as they’re not right for dipping in your soup) as an incentive to make some.  So make some I did.  Today.  I served it for dinner (lunch) fresh from the oven with a bowl of warming spicy lentil and tomato soup (which wasn’t really all that spicy, in fact, but was quite nice, and that’s from someone who isn’t normally keen on tomatoes or soup made from it).  C loved it, and had two hefty chunks of it, even declaring that he liked the doughy bits, where it wasn’t quite cooked (I was late in making it – C has to go back to work after dinner – so I took it out prematurely.  Actually, the outside would have burned if I’d left it in any longer, due to that oven being such as it is) and also the crusts, which is unlike him, as they were quite crispy.  I’m allowed to make that again  :)

Oh, and if you know where I can get buttermilk in Cambridge, I’d appreciate it if you’d leave a comment telling me where.

Tell the world about this!
